How to Get an Iowa Cosmetology License

Iowa has licensing requirements for cosmetology professionals. The main requirements for a license include completion of an approved cosmetology school in Iowa and an exam that covers written theory. Those who meet these requirements or have an existing license from out of state can get licensed and work as an Iowa cosmetologist.

Step 1:

Determine the license requirements. For new cosmetologists, you need to complete a 2100-hour course at an approved Iowa cosmetology school. You can find a list in the Sources below. You will also need to pass a national written exam and a practical exam.

For applicants by endorsement, you can generally get a license without attending additional classes or taking an exam. In some cases, you may have to retake the national written exam. However, you must show verified proof of a license for 12 months in the previous two years to get an Iowa cosmetology license through this method.

Step 2:

Download the LaserGrade “Candidate Handbook” for the exam. This handbook will tell you how to prepare and register for the Iowa cosmetology exam, which is a computer-based national written theory examination. As of 2010, the fee is $55.

Use whatever study tips you can get in the handbook along with the reference materials from your cosmetology school to prepare for the exam.

Step 3:

Take the exam. If you pass, then access the cosmetology license application. You can download it online by looking at the link in the Sources below.

Step 4:

Prepare the license fee. Both applicants by examination and by endorsement must pay a $60 fee, as of 2010. Make a check or money order out to the “Iowa Board of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences.” Those seeking a salon license need to pay $85. Of course, a salon will need to have licensed employees in order to get a license.

Step 5:

Send in the form and fee to the following address:

Iowa Board of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences
Iowa Department of Public Health
Professional Licensure
321 East 12th Street
5th Floor
Des Moines, IA 50319

The board has several additional certifications for specified kinds of services related to the cosmetology industry. Download a certification application for microdermabrasion, laser products and chemical peels if you have or want to obtain training in these areas and get certified.
